MISCAST
Listen to/download Anecdata’s Miscast – released July 1, 2022. A bit of a U-turn from the usual Anecdata sound into an ethereal, funereal haze of echo, reverb and vintage drum machines.
First single and opening tune ‘Rosenhan’ sets the scene with its Depeche Mode pulse and Moog breakdowns.
‘The Deep End’ clocks in at almost 11 minutes, taking in lo-fi alt rock, synthpop and Phil Collins drums along the way.
Recording of Miscast started in 2016, and after six years on and off, was finally completed in 2022.
Echo and reverb fill the spaces Big Muff fuzz would usually occupy on Anecdata records, with the few guitars present mostly sounding like they were recorded on a 1980s boombox.
Some of the tunes survived almost intact from their initial sketches – like ‘Miscast’ and ‘Levels’ – while others took years of messing around, like ‘If You Were a Fish’.
Despite its 11-minute running time, ‘The Deep End’, was literally written and recorded in a single day. The version on the album is 80 percent the demo, just tarted up and remixed a bit
